Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) has advised all mariners and fisher folk to take note of the strong winds and large waves expected in different areas across the country.

Counties to be affected by the strong winds include Turkana, Marsabit, Samburu, Isiolo, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Meru, Kitui, Makueni, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa and Kwale.

According to the advisory, strong southerly winds of 40 knots will be experienced in the Northwest, Northeastern, Central, Eastern, and coastal regions of Kenya, with wave heights of 2.5 metres over Kenyan Indian Ocean Coastal waters from Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th June 2022, reducing to 2.2 metres on Monday 6th June 2022.

Residents in all affected areas are advised to be on the lookout for potential strong winds and very high waves.

These strong winds and very high waves may cause capsizing of boats, lower visibility and threaten the safety of those engaging in maritime activities.

“Everyone is urged to continue listening to local media as updates will be provided if conditions change significantly,” KMA stated.

The KMA also advised small boats and crafts not to venture into the sea, particularly in the afternoon, as strong winds and heavy rainfall are expected.

Fisher folk, vessel operators, passengers and members of thegeneral public venturing into the open sea during this period are urged to exercise caution and continue to follow up on weather updates which will be disseminated in case of any significant changes observed.

The Authority’s Regional Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (RMRCC) can be reached through its emergency lines: 0721-368313 OR 0737-7 194 14 for reports of any emergencies.
