Makueni Launches Ksh. 60M Rural Power Plan

Makueni is set to have massive rural electricity connectivity, following a new Sh 60 million electrification program.

Governor Kivutha Kibwana and REREC Chief Executive Officer Peter Mbugua presented the program, which was sponsored by the county administration in collaboration with the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC), in Wote on Friday.

According to Mbugua, the shilling-for-shilling agreement will boost Makueni from a meager connectivity rate of 25% to a national rate of 70% as the project is rolled out in subsequent financial years.

The 60 million covers the fiscal years 2021-2022, with each partner paying Sh 30 million in a matching fund framework.

Primary school electrification; creation of Mini-Grids; electrification of market centers and other non-electrified public facilities; electrification of the Athi River region; and development of an energy master plan are all part of the concept (s).

Other efforts include the creation and development of energy centers, renewable energy technology research, innovation, and development, and capacity building and technical assistance.

Governor Kibwana said his administration will contribute Sh 30 million in the 2022/23 financial year, which will be matched by REREC, to ensure Makueni’s electrification ambition is completely realized.
