Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has suspended all boda boda operations in two estates due to increased crime rates.
Boda boda operators in the Milimani and Tom Mboya estates were forced to seek alternative transportation to transport their customers in and out of the estates.
The operators roaming the areas were urged to make prior arrangements with their clients to avoid being arrested, according to a statement issued on Friday, March 3.
“The city management has noted with concern rising cases of robberies with violence in Milimani and Tom Mboya where residents have complained of being mugged and having their phones snatched by people riding on boda-boda,” according to a portion of the notice signed by City Manager Abala Wanga.
The drastic decision was prompted by an incident that occurred on Thursday, March 2 night, when a lady and her son were attacked in Milimani at 8.45 p.m.
The County Government Act No 17, of 2012, the Urban Areas and Cities (Amendment) Act No 3 of 2019, and the Physical Planning and Land Use Act No 13 of 2019 were all mentioned in the notice.
“A notice is hereby issued that any rider found operating in Milimani will be apprehended and legal action will be instituted against them,” according to a portion of the statement.
Furthermore, all boda-boda operators in the Milimani area were informed that all of their sheds had been declared illegal.
