Chinese companies have bagged a bulk of Sh71.9 billion worth of infrastructure projects funded by the World Bank.
The World Bank stated that it does not make broad statements about individual contract awards made under Bank-financed projects.Â
For instance, the Sh5 billion Athi-River-Machakos road is being built by China Railway 21st Bureau Group, while the Kakamega-Webuye roads are being built by Jiangzi Zhongmei.
Headquarters Complex for Road Sub-Sector Institutions is being built by China National Aero Technology Engineering Corporation, whearas the James Gichuru Road/ Waiyaki Way Jn – Rironi, a Sh16.3 billion project with 26 kilometers of main road and 17.5 kilometers of feeder roads, is being built by China Wu Yi.
The 40-kilometer Lokichar-Loichangamatak section is being upgraded by China State Engineering Corporation Limited, while the 80-kilometer Lokitaung-Lodwar section is being upgraded by China City Construction Group’s Third Engineering Bureau, and the Kalobeyei-Loitaung section will be upgraded by Chongqing International Construction Corporation.
The Chinese contractors’ dominance of World Bank road bids, on the other hand, suggests that they are quite competitive in comparison to their western counterparts, and refutes the notion that they employ underhanded methods to win road tenders.
The World Bank has a strong procurement operational and contractual structure, which includes procurement regulations that are constantly overseen by the Board of Executive Directors, which represents all shareholders.
