Dutch March Against COVID-19 Lockdowns

Several thousand people gathered in Amsterdam to oppose Covid-19 lockdown measures and vaccines.

Riot police with batons and shields attempted to disperse the surging crowds.

During the latest outbreak of coronavirus infections, protesters broke a restriction on conducting public rallies on Sunday.

In addition to disobeying an order not to march, the demonstrators typically did not wear masks and disregarded social distance regulations.

Thousands of people marched down a major thoroughfare, playing music and waving yellow umbrellas in protest of the government’s actions.

In response, Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema passed an emergency ordinance authorizing police to remove Museum Square.

On December 19, the Netherlands entered into a state of emergency, with the government ordering the closure of all but the most essential stores.

Restaurants, hair salons, gyms, museums, and other public institutions were all shuttered until at least January 14.

Under the existing set of prohibitions, public gatherings of more than two individuals are prohibited.

The Netherlands, like other European countries, adopted the restrictions in order to prevent a new outbreak of the coronavirus strain Omicron.
