Ex-Mungiki Leader Asks Court To Summon DP Gachagua

Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga has asked Nakuru Law Courts to summon Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for alleged contempt of court.

The former leader of the outlawed criminal gang was hauled before a Nakuru court on Tuesday.

He however accused Mr Gachagua of making public statements about a case in which he is facing many accusations, including membership in an organized criminal group.

“This court owes it to the sanctity of the trial and proceedings before it.” Under the general rule of law, statements that amount to sub judice are banned. The details of the case should not be discussed elsewhere other than in court,” said Maina Njenga.

Njenga urged the court to summon Gachagua, alleging that the statements he made against him amounted to contempt because the case was still pending.

“In this case, I’ve been asked to summon the person in the name and form of Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya, who is accused of making comments that amount to sub judice,” the judge said.

However, Njenga’s requests were denied, with the court stating that it was not satisfied that there was a breach of Court orders.

“No material has been placed before me to demonstrate the asserted contempt by the deputy president,” the court said.

Njenga has previously been grilled over accusations of addressing a meeting at the Wanyororo area in Nakuru County on May 11, 2023, to “encourage support” for the outlawed criminal group, Mungiki.

He is accused of inviting individuals to the said meeting at the Wanyororo area where he is alleged to have provided instructions connected with Mungiki.
