How SIM Swap Cartels Stole 547,000 From A UDA MP

Marakwet West member of parliament Timothy Kipchumba Toroitich today narrated to Nairobi court how cartels swindled Ksh 547,567 from his accounts.

According to the MP, he received a phone call from an unknown number before his phone abruptly switched off.

The Mp stated that after rebooting his phone, he received an SMS notice inquiring whether he had allowed transactions in his mobile money and bank accounts.

He informed the court that he immediately called the individual banks’ customer service departments to notify them that money had been transferred from his bank accounts without his authorization.

He subsequently instructed the banks to block any transactions and made a formal report at parliament police station under OB number 16/13/04/2023

The police forwarded the matter to the DCI parliamentary unit who swung into action and apprehended the suspect identified as Boniface Kirui.

He also informed the trial magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi that the banks managed to intercept Ksh 96000 returned to his accounts.

The case will proceed on July 6, with the prosecution expected to parade 4 witnesses to testify.
