Jubilee Party Wrangles Continue As Kanini Kega Calls For Special NDC

The battle for the control of the Jubilee Party is set to continue after a faction led by East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) lawmaker Kanini Kega announced plans to hold Special National Delegates Convention (SNDC).

In a statement on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, acting Secretary General Kanini Kega said the resolutions were reached during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held today.

“The meeting has also resolved that the party will hold a Special National Delegates Convention (SNDC) at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre on July 22, 2023. A notice convening the SNDC will be sent out in due course as required by the party constitution,” Kega said.

Kega maintained that a delegates meeting chaired by former President Uhuru Kenyatta at the Ngong Racecourse on May 22, 2023, was illegal.

“The meeting noted and agreed with the Determination of the Internal Disputes Resolution Committee (IDRC) dated 30th May 2023 which declared the meeting held on 22nd May 2023 at Ngong Racecourse as null and void. The meeting also noted that the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) wrote a letter dated 29th May 2023 that is in the public domain and which confirmed that the said meeting did not follow due process,” Kega said.

As a result, the legislator stated that Uhuru’s allies’ leadership changes during the NDC have no legal ramifications.

“In light of the above we wish to inform our members that the purported changes in the leadership of our Party made at the said meeting are of no legal consequence,” he said.

He said the party has communicated to the Speaker of the National Assembly that the leadership of the Jubilee in the House remains the same including the position of the deputy Minority Whip held by nominated member Sabina Chege.
