The launch of a new flight route to Malindi by Skyward express is expected to boost tourism and impact positively on the development of the sector in Kilifi County. – By Ramadhan Kambi.
Malindi town is a renowned holiday destination in the world with its unique name of ‘Small Milan’ due to the presence of many Italian investors and holiday makers who frequent the town when the tourism high season comes calling.
Recently the devolved government through World Bank(WB) Funded programs has tamacked several kilometres of roads that have given a facelift for the town.
Stakeholders and players in the tourism sector are now upbeat that with a direct route bringing in visitors to this town, the sector is expecting a huge growth and create more job opportunities.
According to Kilifi Deputy Governor Gideon Saburi, the launch of the new route is going to play a key role in bolstering tourism and boost trade and development in the resort town and its environs.
“The presence of the skyward airline positions Kilifi at a strategic place in the world tourism map and it will greatly promote trade and tourism sector at a greater length in improving both local and international tourism which have been the main target especially during the Covid-19 Pandemic,” he said during its launch.
The county he said recognizes immense contribution of the tourism sector to the economic wellbeing in the county and that they have put in tremendous efforts in reviving and supporting the sector.
“We have developed strategies that target to highlight the county’s tourism products by promoting Kilifi as a tourist destination,” he added.
The effects of the Covid-19 pandemic had greatly devastated both the county and Country’s economy and business growth with the tourism sector suffering the great.
“As a county government, we have provided opportunities to the Eco-Tourism groups in Kilifi through the Kilifi Micro-finance fund (Mbegu fund) to boost their businesses. Our targets in this are the local tourism stakeholders including youth and women groups,” he said.
The county has partnered with the tourism finance corporation (TFC) tourism economic stimulus fund that seeks to provide soft loans to tourism establishment to aid restoring the tourism industry from the effects of Covid -19 pandemic.
