Works to upgrade markets in Kimilili Municipality are running full steam. On the Thursday Market, the state-of-the-art facility is more than 70 per cent complete.
Roofing is underway and plastering is due to commence in days. With a capacity to accommodate 5,000 traders, the market serves up to 150,000 people within the municipality.
A perimeter wall around the market will ensure the safety of traders and their merchandise.
The extra stalls around the perimeter wall are a welcome relief to traders who have been plying their trade on dusty and unhygienic grounds. Renovations on the Monday Market and Bus Park are almost complete.
Besides the fresh coat of paint, the market facelift include a fresh roof, fitting lockable stalls and provision of storage for traders.
Under the same Kenya Urban Support Programme, Governor Wangamati has commenced the civil works of retargeting the bus park, erecting passenger sheds and building state-of-the-art and eco-friendly public toilets.
