President Uhuru Kenyatta has lauded the work going on at the new Kipevu Oil terminal, which is located at the port of Mombasa.

While visiting the facility, President Uhuru said the facility was a symbol of good relations between Kenya and China to accelerate growth.

“I want to thank the People’s Republic of China for being there and walking with us hand in hand at our point of need.”

John Mwangemi the managing director at the Kenya port authority said that the project consists of an offshore island terminal that has four berths with a length of 770m and a workboat located at the Westmont area for landing.

Speaking on the old Kipevu Oil terminal he said that it has the capacity to only accommodate only one vessel at a time.

He went on to say that the discharge pipe sizes were smaller, product and discharge flow rates were also much slower although they served well at the time.

Speaking on the new KOT he said that it is fast and modern and will give more benefits to the region surrounding it.

The new KOT is also expected to reduce freight costs since there are improved cargo handling capacities and also security of supply for the region

Completion of the new Kipevu Oil Terminal in Mombasa will see Kenya double its capacity to handle the transit of petroleum products to Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda by January.
