Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza Faces Impeachment, Barely A Month Into Office

A Meru County resident petitioned the Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) to impeach the area governor, Kawira Mwangaza.

Salesio Mutuma, a former senatorial candidate, filed a motion in court on Thursday, October 27, seeking an order compelling MCAs to remove Mwangaza for gross misconduct.

Mutuma accused the county chief of nepotism, claiming she appointed family members and friends to county positions.

“Her official diver is a husband to her personal assistant, her cousin is the county government spokesperson, and her husband is the Meru Youth Service patron. These appointments are not only irregular but also illegal,” the petition read in part.

Furthermore, he accused Mwangaza of breaking the rules when she appointed the chair of the Meru County revenue board.

Meru assembly clerk Jacob Kirari confirmed receiving the petition and forming a legal team to study it and respond appropriately.

Article 181 (1) (a) and (c) of the Constitution provide for the removal of a county governor from office for gross violations of the Constitution, abuse of office, or gross misconduct.

Earlier, the county chief revealed that she had received the MCAs’ formal request for ward funding approval.

She did, however, reiterate that she would follow county procedures and was prepared to fight the ward representatives.

“I am ready to give MCAs Ksh100 million once I am given a go-ahead; be happy now. Meanwhile, bring it on mtajua hamujui. Kaende kaende tena bila brakes. Get used to it,” Mwangaza wrote.

Governor Mwangaza has been at odds with members of the County Assembly since taking office, reaching a climax last week when MCAs walked out during her inaugural speech.

Police were forced to use tear gas canisters as supporters of Ms Mwangaza and MCAs hurled stones at each other.

Meru legislators have offered to mediate between the county boss and ward representatives, despite each side hardening its stance.

On Sunday, Meru MCAs awoke to find their WhatsApp group, “Meru County MCAs 2022,” had been disbanded.

They claim that this was their only connection to Governor Mwangaza. As the feud with the county legislators heated up, Governor Mwangaza, the group’s founder and administrator, removed all of the MCAs and disbanded it.
