National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has ordered the permanent closure of 15 slaughterhouses in Kiamaiko.

In an interview with a local TV station on Sunday, NEMA Director-General Mamo Boru ordered the owners of the abattoirs to relocate to a newly built multimillion abattoir in Lucky Summer, Njiru.

The operators of the slaughterhouses, who have ignored the facility since its founding, have one month to relocate.
Boru stated that the relocation must be implemented immediately in order to prevent further pollution of the Nairobi River.

The operators of the slaughterhouses have been accused of dumping effluent into the Nairobi River.

“We have given them the month of February to organize themselves and move to the site. There are no extensions. We have engaged them for long, now it’s time to move,” ordered Mamo.

According to NEMA, the closure is part of ensuring that the Nairobi River regeneration initiative is on track.
