Nelly Cheboi: From Homelessness to CNN Hero Of The Year

Nelly Cheboi the 29-year-old Kenyan village girl who made headlines globally after being named the 2022 CNN Hero of the Year has described the award as a win for African mothers who struggle to bring up their children.

Nelly came from a humble background in a remote village called Mogotio in Baringo County.

She beat all the odds to make an impact for her initiative to empower young people through her organization Techlit Africa that created computer labs for Kenyan School Children.

Ms Cheboi was raised up by a struggling mother, sleeping under leaking roofs in the remote village but still managed to reach where she is today.

“To see her in my school like walking in the campus the way I used to walk, to see her being in the places where I always go like in the apartment where I am living seeing her walking upstairs seeing her in the dining table that breached my true world because for so long that was just a strange place no one back home knew where I was, no one knew what life was in America, I couldn’t share that, like how do you describe snow,” she said.

During the sunny days meditation she would ream of having a better house built rentals so that her family could live well away from the agony and suffering caused by poverty .

“For me I knew that education gave me a better chance achieving my dreams , first of all I wanted to do well in KCPE so that I could get a scholarship so that my mum would not have to worry about educating me and work so hard so as to pay my tuition,” she said.

She also used to go to school with a lot of books so as to read anytime she had a chance.

Her efforts earned her the top position in the District during the 2006 KCPE examination and she was admitted in a national school- Mary Hill Girls School which was four hours away from her Mogotio village.

While in high school Cheboi also struggled with tuition fees as her mum could not afford to pay school fees.

She would often be sent home on different occasions due to lack of school fees.

Despite all that she managed still to get an A of 82 out of Mary hill girls school. So many people heard about it and one person knew about Zawadi Africa .

Kenyan Woman Recycles and Refurbishes Computers to Teach Next Generation in Tech — WeINSPIRE Movement

The award winner said she saved all the money she got from her casual job and in one year managed to move her family from her childhood shanty to a rental apartment with electricity , latrine outside and a water tank.

To her even as she thought of transforming her mother’s life she wanted to also empower people to move out of the poverty they were living in for the better in her village .

“I thought that the best thing I can do is have a school and the school is going to teach people creative ways of making money, instead of just focusing on the best people doing well in KCPE and then the rest are left to make it really rough for them to survive,” she said.

In 2015 Cheboi built a school and named it Zawadi after Zawadi Africa which was officially launched in 2016.

She said in the first year they had about 100 students but today the school is so big , it is a four floor building .

At the time of building the school Cheboi said it is when she discovered Computer Science and she realized there was an easy way to empower people without so much investments.

So far she said the school which is within the community is running well with over 300 children.

“It started very simple we just started bringing in computers into the school and then teach a few people how to use a computer and then we actually realized that we could actually take computers into other schools,” she said.

They embarked on that mission to take computers to school where they got a room and trained youth in that community to teach the children those skills.

To run the program in one school she said cost them Sh. 40,000 monthly.

Cheboi said the biggest challenge they have is not the computers but finding schools in the community that value the program enough and willing to pay for program.

Kenya Railways Goes Cashless For Tickets Starting Feb 1

The Kenya Railways has announced that they will no longer be accepting cash payments for tickets at all Madaraka Express stations starting February 1.

According to a notice by the Kenya Railways management, the only acceptable payment modes would be from mobile money wallets or credit cards.

“We wish to notify our customers and general public that effective February 1 2023, we will no longer be accepting cash for purchase of tickets at all Madaraka Express Passenger Service Stations,” reads the notice.

The use of cashless payments has been commended for curbing theft of public monies, as it reduces human interaction with money.

This new development is in line with Kenya Kwanza administration’s plan to digitize all government services, so as to enhance service delivery.

EACC Launches Verification To Assess Somalia’s Readiness To Join The Bloc

The East African Community (EAC) has officially launched a verification mission to determine whether the Federal Republic of Somalia will be admitted to the regional bloc.

The verification process will begin on Wednesday, with senior officials from EAC member countries assessing Somalia’s readiness to join the EAC.

The exercise is being held in Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital.

Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo are the current EAC member states.

Mogadishu applied to join the Community for the second time in 2019, but the Community never sent a team of experts to the country to determine eligibility.

There were several issues on which the EAC needed Mogadishu to agree. The process of joining the Community is expected to take at least two years.

Somalia reapplied and expressed interest in joining the EAC after the Democratic Republic of the Congo was admitted.

In a previous address at the EAC heads of State Summit, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said, “Somalia belongs to East Africa. There is no country among the seven countries sitting here that Somalia is not linked to by business, by community or by any other means.”

Rwanda Says DR Congo Warplane Violated Airspace

Rwanda’s government said on Tuesday that a fighter jet from Democratic Republic of Congo had violated its airspace, prompting its defense force to fire in response.

A video shared widely on Congolese social media showed a projectile shooting toward an airborne military plane, before exploding in the air near the plane, which continued to fly. Reuters could not immediately verify the video.

The incident is the latest dispute between the two countries whose relationship has been strained by a rebel insurgency.

Congo, United Nations experts and Western powers have accused Rwanda of backing the M23 rebel group in eastern Congo, which seized several towns and villages in offensives last year. Rwanda has denied any involvement.

Regional leaders brokered an agreement in November under which the Tutsi-led group was meant to withdraw from recently seized positions by January 15 as part of efforts to end a conflict that has displaced at least 450,000 people.

Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi said last week that the rebels had not fully withdrawn from those areas.

“The RDF (Rwanda Defense Force) fired at the fighter jet from DRC that violated Rwandan airspace in Rubavu — same area as previous violations,” Rwandan government spokesperson Yolande Makolo said in a statement.

Makolo said the jet violated its airspace at 5:03 p.m. local time, prompting the government to take defensive measures against it. “Rwanda asks the DRC to stop this aggression,” she said.

When asked for comment, the Congolese government said it was preparing a statement.

In December, Rwanda said another fighter jet from Congo had briefly violated its air space.

An unarmed Congolese warplane also briefly landed at a Rwandan airport in November while on a reconnaissance mission near the border, in what Congo said was an accident.

Conflict-Torn DR Congo Gears Up For Papal Visit

In DR Congo’s bustling capital Kinshasa, the faithful are flocking to impromptu market stalls in churchyards to buy t-shirts and wax tissues adorned with the image of Pope Francis, ahead of the pontiff’s visit.

Papal souvenirs have become hot-selling items in the city ahead of the Argentinian pope’s four-day trip to the deeply religious central African country, which begins on January 31.

Many in the Democratic Republic of Congo view the papal visit as a chance to soothe tensions in the east, where M23 rebels have captured swaths of territory since last year and provoked a humanitarian crisis.

Berthe Baleweya, a woman who’d come to Kinshasa’s Notre-Dame du Congo cathedral to buy a Francis-themed wax cloth, told AFP that wearing the pope’s image would be a “great blessing”.

Emmanuelle Wemu, who runs a Catholic aid group, has already bought and tailored her wax print decorated with the pope’s face.

“I expect a message of peace from him, in this moment when the DRC is in turmoil,” she said.

Over one million worshippers are expected to turn out for an open-air mass in Kinshasa’s Ndolo airport on February 1, a sizeable portion in the megacity of over 15 million.

The DRC is a traditionally Catholic nation of over 90 million people, deeply impoverished despite vast mineral wealth.

 Conflict in the east

Pope Francis was scheduled to arrive in the DRC last July, but the trip was postponed over health concerns.

Many also speculated that escalating conflict in eastern Congo — where the pope had been due to visit — prompted a rethink.

The M23 rebel group, which is allegedly backed by Rwanda, has waged an offensive against the Congolese military and recently come within several miles of Goma, a commercial hub of over a million people and capital of North Kivu province.

Pope Francis is no longer due to go to eastern Congo, according to his new programme, but he will meet victims of the conflict while in Kinshasa.

Some are disappointed. Gelo Mandela, a youth coordinator in the diocese of Goma, said young people were despairing that the city was no longer on the itinerary. “We were prepared,” he said.

Aid worker Emmanuelle Wemu said she hoped the pope’s visit would bring reconciliation with Rwanda.

Diplomatic relations between the DRC and its smaller neighbour have plunged to rock-bottom since the eruption of the M23 crisis in late 2021. Rwanda denies backing the rebels.

Pope Francis’ security in Kinshasa also remains a concern, notably because of the threat of militias from the east.

The Allied Democratic Forces, which the Islamic State group claims at its affiliate, bombed a Pentecostal church in eastern Congo on January 15, killing 14 people.

The ADF has to date only operated in eastern DRC, over 1,500 kilometres (930 miles) from the capital.

Million-strong mass

A three-day period of prayers — known as a triduum — is planned at the Notre-Dame du Congo cathedral in the run-up to Francis’ arrival.

A vigil will also take place at Ndolo military airport on the night of January 31, ahead of the papal mass there the following morning, according to Father Camille Esika, a cathedral priest.

Between one and 1.5 million people are expected to celebrate mass at the eight-hectare (20-acre) site. Preparatory works are ongoing.

“That day, rain or no rain, there will be an event,” said Jesus-Noel Sheke, the project’s technical coordinator.

Across Kinshasa, banners and signs welcoming the pope already hang from buildings. His visit marks the first papal trip to the country since Pope John Paul II’s in 1985.

Justin-Marie Bayala, a teacher who attended a recent mass at the Notre-Dame du Congo, like many, evoked high hopes.

“We dare to believe that he will bring us lasting peace,” Bayala said.

New US Rape Lawsuit Filed Against Boxer Mike Tyson

A woman in New York state has filed a civil suit against Mike Tyson, accusing the former boxing champion of raping her in a limousine in the early 1990s, according to court filings.

The woman, who asked the court to remain anonymous, filed her complaint in early January under a temporary New York state law allowing victims of sexual assault to seek civil damages regardless of the statute of limitations.

Tyson spent three years in jail beginning in 1992 after being found guilty of raping model Desiree Washington, who was 18 at the time.

In a short affidavit dated December 23, 2022, the plaintiff states that she met the boxer at a nightclub “in the early 1990s,” then followed him into his limousine, where he allegedly assaulted her before raping her.

“As a result of Tyson’s rape, I suffered and continue to suffer from physical, psychological and emotional injury,” she said.

She is seeking $5 million in damages.

By late Tuesday, Tyson had not issued any public statement.

Born in Brooklyn in 1966, Tyson had a turbulent childhood before becoming the undisputed heavyweight champion in the 1980s, terrifying his opponents with his fury in the ring and a phenomenal punching power.

But after his prison sentence, he could not retain his titles.

In a notorious 1996 matchup, Tyson bit off a piece of his opponent Evander Holyfield’s ear.

Gripped by depression and addiction, he continued to make headlines, notably for a one-man show in which he described his life’s many ups and downs.

He has recently launched into the cannabis industry with his own brand of marijuana products, and hosts a podcast.

Uhuru Condemns North Kivu Killings, Calls For Peace

Written By Vanessa Kariuki ||

Former President of Kenya H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta, the main man facilitating the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) peace process has condemned the rapidly deteriorating situation in North Kivu.

This is after fresh fighting broken out between a number of armed groups as well as between the FARDC and the M23.

Uhuru has called for an end to all hostilities, commitment to the Luanda Agreements, and a restart of the Nairobi Peace Process on talks to promote peace in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

He called out the fighting groups after reports that civilians were being killed by armed groups.

Thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes as a result of the fighting.

He also implores the DRC government and the international community to increase their aid to the IDPs.

Ten Hag Urges Rashford To Fulfil His Ambitions With Man Utd

Erik ten Hag has told Marcus Rashford to stay at Manchester United because he wants to transform them into the world’s best team.

United have failed to win the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 and their last major trophy was the Europa League in 2017.

It is their worst trophy drought in 40 years, but United boss Ten Hag is showing signs of being able to rebuild the club after a positive start to his reign this season.

England forward Rashford has emerged as a key figure in United’s climb to fourth in the Premier League.

After two years of poor form, the 25-year-old has been revitalised by Ten Hag and United hope he will extend a contract that has 18 months to run.

French giants Paris Saint Germain were linked with Rashford last season but, on the eve of United’s League Cup semifinal first leg at Nottingham Forest on Wednesday, Ten Hag made a confident pitch to the forward to remain at Old Trafford.

“I think he understands Man United is his club. That’s first. But also, in this environment, in this team, I think he is playing his best football,” Ten Hag told reporters.

“He’s improving and that’s about him because he’s working on the good things. He’s giving 100 per cent energy, he has a good plan and I think also in this team he can bring in his qualities.

“So, this team can help him get in the right position and to score goals, where he is good at. If we want to get the success we want, we need him.”

Rashford has scored 17 goals in all competitions for United this season and shone for England at the World Cup in Qatar.

Asked about a potential revival of PSG’s interest in Rashford, Ten Hag said: “I hope that all our players get an interest from clubs because that means we do a good job, the team is outperforming, so that is what we are aiming for.

“Then, I would say this is the best place to be because we want to construct the best team, first of England and then in Europe and then in the world.”

Moshiri Says Everton Not For Sale But Close To Securing Stadium Investment

Everton owner Farhad Moshiri has said the Premier League club is not for sale, but he is close to securing investment to help with building a new stadium.

Moshiri told the club’s Fan Advisory Board (FAB) that he is looking for help financing the construction of Everton’s new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock in a video posted on the club website on Tuesday but recorded prior to their defeat to West Ham United on Saturday.

The Guardian newspaper on Tuesday reported that Moshiri had put the Merseyside club, who are languishing in the Premier League relegation zone and sacked manager Frank Lampard on Monday, up for sale.

When asked to comment on the Guardian report by Reuters, an Everton spokesperson said the video posted on the club website made Moshiri’s views clear.

“The club is not for sale but I have been talking to top investors, really quality, to bridge a gap (in funding) on the stadium,” Moshiri told the club’s FAB.

“I can do it myself and the reason I want to do it is to bring top sport investors to Everton. We are close to having a deal done. It is not selling the club at all. It is bringing more expertise in terms of sponsorship, commercial development and a lot of specialist sport investors have this pool of knowledge.

“The stadium is the best-performing area of our operation at the moment: on time, on budget. Once we get through the current underperformance fans can start dreaming with me. The stadium was never a luxury for Everton. For us, it was a necessity.”

Everton have played every season since 1954-55 in the top flight, but have won only three of their 20 leagues games this term and sit second bottom of the standings.

Moshiri sought to reassure fans that the team can still turn things around.

“The ambition for Everton is always to be part of the elite,” he added. “We were part of the elite. Our goal is never to be in the bottom three. Our ambition is to play European football.

“We haven’t succeeded today but we have laid the foundation to do it. We’ll get there but we can only get there together.”
