Man Stabs Three To Death In A Kindergarten

Chinese authorities have arrested a man suspected of killing three people and injuring six in a stabbing attack at a kindergarten in southern Jiangxi province Wednesday, according to local public security officials.

Police said the suspect, identified as 48-year-old Liu Xiaohui, fled to a mountainous area in a neighboring county after the attack, triggering a search by more than 1,000 police officers.

Liu was arrested 12 hours later, at 10:50 p.m. on Wednesday local time, police said in a statement Thursday.

It’s not clear if children are among those killed and injured as the identities of the victims have not been made public.

However, Education Ministry officials in Jiangxi have requested urgent efforts to “treat injured children and comfort victims’ families in a timely manner.”

Schools in the area have been urged to “strengthen campus safety.”

“All schools in all regions need to work with public security (and) other departments to immediately and comprehensively carry out a major investigation and rectification of potential safety issues on campuses, including kindergartens,” the ministry said, adding that schools with “insufficient security personnel or insufficient security measures” would be closed for the rest of the summer term.

Violent crimes at schools are rare in China, but not unheard of.

Two children were killed in April 2021 when a knife-wielding man entered a kindergarten in the southern Guangxi region bordering Vietnam.

Two teachers and 14 other children were wounded. Local police said the suspect, a local man, had a history of schizophrenia.

In 2020, an attacker with a knife injured 37 children and two adults at another school in Guangxi.

Kakamega Homeboyz Snatch Nzoia Sugar’s Top Scorer

Kakamega Homeboyz have raided Nzoia Sugar for top marksman Levis Okello who was the team’s top scorer last season with nine goals to his name.

Okello had attracted interest from the likes of Tusker FC, Bandari and Nairobi City Stars but has opted to cross over to their Western region rivals, inking a two-year deal with Homeboyz who are still without a coach over a month since Bernard Mwalala left the team.

The lanky striker joined Nzoia at the start of last season after a year in the cold. Prior to that he had turned out for Vihiga Bullets in the second tier.

Nzoia Sugar coach Salim Babu has confirmed that he is in the market in search of a replacement for the attacker and has identified a pair that feature in the Division One league as possible replacements for Okello.

“Okello joined Homeboyz and we are now looking on how to fill that position. There are a number of players who play in that position that we are looking at, there are around two who play in Division One League and I think if we manage to get them we will be good to go,” he said.

The Bungoma based club is set to lose more key players with Kevin Juma, James Kibande and Joseph Mwangi in talks with Tusker FC. Boniface Munyendo could be Ulinzi Stars bound and although he admits that the departures are a blow, Babu believes that they will rebuild and have a competitive squad.

” It’s definitely a blow but we have to rebuild. I am confident that we will get good replacements soon. This region is blessed with some good talents and I am confident that we will have a great team for next season, ” he added.

PSG Set To Beat Barcelona To Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva

Paris Saint-Germain are looking to challenge Barcelona for the signature of Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva, reports Foot Mercato.

Silva, 27, has been followed closely by the Blaugrana this summer but, having prioritised other moves, the LaLiga club are now in a position where they must offload players before they can table an offer to City.

Pep Guardiola’s Premier League champions are looking for a transfer fee in the region of €85 million for the Portugal international, and Silva is reportedly open to making the switch back to France if an agreement is reached with PSG — despite previously calling it a dream to play at Camp Nou.

With the Ligue 1 club optimistic that its sporting director Luis Campos would be able to get a deal over the line, PSG are confident of landing the former AS Monaco star if Barcelona continue to hesitate in meeting City’s demands.

Leicester Goalkeeper Schmeichel Joins French Club Nice

Kasper Schmeichel has completed a move to French club Nice to end his 11-year stay at Leicester City, the clubs announced Wednesday.

The 35-year-old leaves the King Power Stadium as a club legend after being one of the best players in Leicester’s shock Premier League title win in the 2015-16 season.

Schmeichel played a key role in Leicester’s successful journey after helping them gain promotion to the top-flight in 2014.

After winning the league, Schmeichel also won the FA Cup in 2020 and the Community Shield the following campaign.

“Throughout his time with us and particularly as a captain and vice-captain, Kasper has always been a player willing to stand up and take responsibility, leading the team with distinction,” Leicester City chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha said. “His influence and his leadership on and off the pitch speak volumes about him as a professional, as a football player and as a human being.

“I know Leicester City supporters share the respect we all have for a player of Kasper’s standing after all his accomplishments as a footballer and captain and will join me in wishing him the very best for the next stage of his career in France with OGC Nice.

“It’s clear to everyone who has watched him perform that Kasper has given everything to Leicester City every time he has played and the experiences shared between him, the club and our supporters over the last 11 years mean he will always remain a part of this family.”

President Uhuru Inspects Kenya’s First Agri-Hub

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday made an inspection visit to Eni Kenya, the country’s first agri-hub that produces vegetable oil and related bio-products.

The agri-hub located at Kwa Kathoka in Makueni County started production last month and has already employed close to 200 workers, mostly young people from the county.

The establishment of the agri-hub was as a result of a meeting held in Nairobi between President Kenyatta and Mr. Claudio Descalzi, the CEO of Eni SPA, an Italian multinational energy company headquartered in Rome.

Eni Kenya, which is a subsidiary of the Italian multinational company, in July last year signed an agreement with the Government of Kenya to promote the circular economy by setting up 20 agri-hubs for production of bio-fuels and related bio-products, with the Makueni agri-hub as the first.

Addressing workers during the inspection visit, President Kenyatta encouraged them to work hard so that the factory can expand rapidly and create more jobs, earn farmers income and help to reduce the cost of fuel.

Speaking during the occasion, Eni Kenya’s Managing Director Mr. Enrico Tavolini said the Makueni agri-hub has an installed capacity of 15,000 tons of oil production annually.

Mr. Tavolini added that the factory has already provided market access to over 25,000 farmers and will also operate as a training and technical support hub for the farmers.

Present during the inspection tour were Energy Cabinet Secretary Dr. Monica Juma and Makueni Governor Prof. Kivutha Kibwana and senior officials of the National and county governments.

Kibicho Assures Security Amid Relocating Kenyans

Dr. Karanja Kibicho, Principal Secretary of the Interior, has allayed fears of election-related violence and discouraged stockpiling and panic relocations ahead of next week’s elections.

Dr. Kibicho told Gukena FM and Radio Jambo that there is no need to worry about chaos before, during, or after the elections because adequate security has been deployed across the country, with a special focus on traditional and emerging hotspots.

“There is absolutely no reason for panic as most of the country is green in colour in our potential hotspots map which means there is no cause for alarm. Based on past experiences and other factors, we have been mapping out areas vulnerable to disturbances and have deployed according to the heat maps to ensure every single Kenyan is safe during this period,” he said.

The PS urged Kenyans to disregard scaremongering that is encouraging panic-buying of essential commodities, noting that the government had put in place strategies to ensure peace and free movement of people and goods throughout the election campaign.

He attributed the optimism that peace and order will prevail to early election security preparations that began more than three years ago, as well as security sector reforms over the last nine years.

The reforms include raising the salaries and allowances of police officers, chiefs, and other National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs), as well as better equipping and allocating more and modern relevant equipment.

The PS chastised a group of leaders for attempting to gain political capital by making false claims about police salaries and criticizing their new uniform.

“You have heard these honey-tongued politicians telling barefaced lies that we have done nothing to improve the wellbeing of our police officers. They know that they are insincere and are only trying to pander to the interests of the voters in a desperate attempt to gain support,” he said.

Police Constables now earn a gross salary of Kshs 45,500, up from Kshs 25,800 in 2012, while those in the rank of “Inspector” are paid around Ksh 83,000, up from Ksh 50,000 ten years ago, according to the PS.

Commissioners’ pay has also risen gradually, from Ksh 146,700 in 2012 to the current Ksh 175,400.

Dr. Kibicho cited improvements in police health and medical coverage, which he said had increased to Ksh 5.3 billion for annual comprehensive medical coverage and Ksh 4.8 billion for group life insurance coverage.

A new specialized hospital for officers has also been built in Mbagathi, Nairobi.

“Kenya has witnessed great many firsts in the last ten years. The level of support towards capacity-building and addressing the welfare of our officers has been profound. We have even built state-of-the art hospitals for them and our plan to provide them with decent accommodation and housing allowances is a work in progress.”

Under President Kenyatta’s regime, expenditure on equipment and weaponry has also increased, which the PS claims has increased officers’ confidence and capacity to perform their duties better.

To facilitate their operations, he revealed that the entry-level salary for assistant chiefs had been raised and supplemented by other field service allowances. In addition, their offices have been granted Authority to Incur Expenditure (AIE) of Ksh 60,000 per year.

“These lies are very annoying to Kenyans. These officers have opened their job mobility and can now rise from Job Group F to Job Group N naturally without being interviewed. And this means their salaries are increased relative to their years of service,” the PS said.

The salary increase has been implemented all the way up to the Regional Commissioners in the NGAOs structure.

PS Kibicho reiterated that he will leave office happy, having laid the groundwork for his successor to have a greater impact in the security sector and implement subsequent reforms.
