President Uhuru Kenyatta said the Kenya Defence Forces is playing a leading role in the efforts to speed up the pace of Kenya’s industrialisation.

The President said the country’s prosperity goes hand-in-hand with an environment of peace and security enabled by the KDF and sister agencies in the security and defence sectors.

He called upon the military to be direct drivers of Kenya’s prosperity by contributing to the national industrialization processes.

“I am pleased, in that regard, to note the efforts the Ministry of Defense is making to expand the current defence industrial production,” the Head of State said.

The President said the military’s involvement in industrialisation will not only boost Kenya’s capabilities with respect to security-related logistics but will also support other sectors of national growth while expanding the scope of skills and competencies across the entire economic landscape.

President Kenyatta spoke at the Recruits Training School in Eldoret where he presided over a recruits’ passing out parade.

The President said the KDF will continue playing its role in regional and international security with more vigour.

Kenya is currently vying for a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council and hopes to get the backing of most nations.

The Head of State said he appreciates the role KDF has continued to play in securing Kenya within the framework of multi-agency operations.

Beyond Kenyan borders, the Kenyan military has been instrumental in the search for regional and global peace as part of the country’s contribution to a stable international environment.

The President said KDF will continue supporting the quest for peace and stabilization of Somalia under the auspices of the African Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

“Not only does this bring peace, security and stability to a neighbouring state with which we share deep historic bonds; it also provides our nation with safety and security from terror groups and other asymmetrical threats,” the President said.

He said KDF will continue to carry on Kenya’s proud tradition of participation in United Nations peace keeping operations whenever called upon.

The President said Kenya has always stood shoulder-to-shoulder with all nations and peoples of the world, who adhere to the universal lrinciples of utmost respect for human rights, democracy and freedom.

“We shall never waver from that solemn commitment, and each graduand today should expect to be called upon to continue that tradition wherever the demands of keeping the peace may require,” he said.

The Head of State said KDF epitomises the very best attributes of Kenya as a nation, adding that they are a landmark of national unity and cohesion.

He said the government will continue investing to give Kenya’s men and women in uniform the best training and equipment necessary for the security challenges of the 21st century.

“It is also important to note that the 21st century defence landscape is one that requires our warriors to be better, stronger, more committed and more competent than ever before.  I have the utmost confidence in the ability of the Kenya Defence Forces to rise up to these challenges,” the President said.

During the ceremony, the President presented awards to recruits who came out top in various fields. The best recruit all-round was Becky Juma, the second best recruit all-round was Paul Nduta and the third best recruit all-round was John Tsome.  The Best recruit in combat marksmanship was Quintine Indeche.

Commandant of the Recruits Training School Brigadier Peter Njiru said the new soldiers will be deployed into various sections of the military.

Defence Cabinet Secretary Amb Raychelle Omamo and other senior government officials also attended the colourful ceremony.

Kibra By-Elections: Jubilee’s Mariga bet in Kibra Constituency ‘Imeungua’

Probably the most popular of the bunch, former footballer Mc. Donald Mariga’s bet to contest for the Kibra parliamentary seat took a surprising turn for the worst after Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) revoked the nomination of his bid.

According to IEBC, the former footballer has not been a registered voter, as his name could not be found in the 2017 register.

However, Mariga through his lawyers has announced that he will be heading to the IEBC Disputes Resolutions Tribunal to appeal the decision, saying “I am a registered voter, I don’t know why they can’t find my name.”

Mariga, who was accompanied by Boni Khalwale in a colourful march, was left a disappointed man, learning that he could not contest out of BASIC grounds, more like Group stages, or your first bet.

It is interesting that despite all pomp and colour, Jubilee opted to field a popular figure for the leadership of Kibra. A superstar of soughts who could have had a better chance at retiring as a coach to help our ailing National team, probably help the government implement its promises on youth, But he chose the pulpit.

Even as Mariga seeks to appeal the ruling, only time will tell if Jubilee’s bid to clinch the crucial Kibra vote has actually turned toast.

The body of Zimbabwe’s former president Robert Mugabe was flown home from Singapore on Wednesday morning, five days after he died in a hospital in the wealthy city-state.

Police motorbikes escorted the white Mercedes hearse carrying Mugabe’s body from Singapore Casket, a funeral parlour where he had been kept since his death.

A plane carrying the former leader and the visiting delegation departed shortly afterwards, his nephew Adam Molai told AFP.

“It just left now,” he said by phone from the plane as it took off, with the noise of the aircraft audible in the background.

The delegation from Zimbabwe arrived on Tuesday and attended a private Catholic mass for Mugabe at the funeral parlour, which was officiated by a Zimbabwean priest.

Mugabe’s body was expected to arrive in Zimbabwe on Wednesday at 3pm (1300 GMT), a family member told Reuters. From there, it will be taken to his home village in Kutama, west of the capital Harare, where he has been mourned as a hero and where there will be an overnight wake.

Mugabe died on Friday at 95 years old.

Forex Bureaus in trouble as banks hawk dollars, Euro

The future of force bureaus looks bleak after commercial banks went flexible on their force rates for the first time since liberalisation.

Commercial banks have been calling their customers to lure them to exchange or buy dollars at better rates than forex bureau.
The banks are targeting clients with both dollar and shilling accounts. Others on the banks radar are SMEs involved in import and export and tenderpreneurs.

Also targeted are Kenyans in diaspora and cash merchants out to underwrite risks by converting local Kenyan shilling to dollars and euros.

Initially the banks hoped to make a windfall in the ongoing mop up of the old generation notes.
Account holders interviewed confirmed getting better rates from their banks.

Variously, the Central Bank has suspected forex bureaus of Money laundering activities that abet graft. Some forex bureaus in Eastleigh with links to Dubai have been on CBK radar.

It is alleged that money laundering between Kenya and Dubai is rampant. It involved cartels and businessmen who initially imported goods through the Eldoret International Airport
The forex marketing is being undertaken through email, telephone calls, social media and other forums

Tanga Tanga ‘wins’ round one as Kieleweke plots retaliation

Ndindi Nyoro of Tanga Tanga has won the first round of his bout against Dr.Karanja Kibicho…the man he claims masterminded his arrest.

Variously, unconfirmed media reports have elucidated the run ins between the internal security PS Kibicho and the Tanga team, led by DP Dr. William Ruto.

The supremacy war climax was the damning allegations by the DP that certain CS’s were planning to kill him.

Prior to the damning allegations, and for which blogger Denis Itumbi was charged in court, the DP had accused Dr. Kibicho of failing to provide security during his Tanga Tanga tours.

Kibicho of course rubbished the allegations and blamed the Tanga Tanga team for failure to communicate in good time their itinerary.

Which brings us to the hard questions.
Nyoro is a die hard DP Ruto supporter. The DP has rebelled against his boss President Kenyatta and continued his early campaigns for 2022. The DP has trained his guns on Raila Odinga, who he claims is in the 2022 race.

Tellingly, the DP and allies are accusing Dr.Kibicho of being used by forces opposed to his 2022 bid.

It would appear that Nyoro is just a platform being used by political and systems giants to settle scores.

Fir starters, Nyoro has no capacity, political, financial or otherwise to take on the system…leave alone Dr. Kibicho. But he has a loud mouth that is an asset for Tanga Tanga as it seeks ground in Central Province.

One other the curious hand, the Tanga Tanga group now looks more of a Central Kenya and Rift Valley affair and some pockets in Western Kenya led by the bull fighter Bony Khalwale.

So what is next for the Kieleweke team in light of the growing hostility in Central Province?

It so happens that Wiĺliam Maina Kamanda is not working alone. He must be having the tacit support from certain quarters. It is these quarters that made him escape with affray, the offence he and Nyoro should have faced.

And while at it, why were politicians allowed to defile a place of worship in the name of a fundraiser?
