Justin Muturi, the Speaker of the National Assembly, has condemned the Meru killings on Saturday, blaming them on a grazing land dispute.

Muturi stated in a statement that the incident was an act of a “terrible crime” for which the offenders should face the law.

“I know the agony of losing a family member in such horrific circumstances is as unfathomable as it is unbearable,” Muturi remarked as he condoled with the grieving families.

In addition, the Speaker, who is running for President in August, encouraged the government to tighten security in the afflicted neighborhoods.

At the same time, he urged local authorities to pursue any and all options that would ensure peaceful cohabitation between communities.

“Farmers must be able to settle in peace and cultivate their crops.” Pastoralists should be able to graze their animals without intruding on farms.”

The impacted region is part of the Northern Grazing Area, which is owned by the community.

There has been continuous demarcation of the same, and homeowners have complained about delays caused by local land officials’ bureaucratic frustrations.
