IPOA has opened investigations into the killing of four demonstrators who were on Thursday shot dead in a standoff with police officers drawn from the elite GSU.

Makindu Hospital confirmed the four deaths, adding that six other people had suffered injuries of varying severity.

The incident occurred at Masimba Trading Centre on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway as a result of a demonstration by residents who were outraged by rising cases of human-wildlife conflict in the Poka Kenyawa Ward, Kajiado County.

Residents who were frustrated barricaded the road for hours, paralyzing transport as motorists and transporters watched helplessly.

According to witnesses, a contingent of GSU officers in a truck found themselves in the midst of the chaos as the blockade had caused massive traffic.

They then attempted to force their way through, but the crowd charged, pelting stones at the officers, who responded by opening fire.

Mashuru Sub County Police boss Charles Chepkong’a confirmed the incident, stating that an investigation has been launched.
