CS Matiang’i Defends Harun Aydin Deportation

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has slammed Deputy President William Ruto’s apology to the Turkish government over the deportation of businessman Harun Aydin.

Matiang’i, speaking for the first time about the matter, described Aydin as a criminal who had utilized some VIPs to obtain access into the nation twice without having his passport stamped.

“The government of the Republic of Kenya cannot, would not and has not apologized, because there is nothing wrong we have done on this matter, and we have done what we have agreed with the Turkish government, to deport their citizen so that they can deal with him,’’ said Matiang’i.

Matiang’i claimed Ayden was on the security radar of other East African countries because of his movements when testifying before the National Assembly Committee on Security and National Administration.

Even as MPs questioned how the Turkish national entered the country twice without his passport being stamped, Matiang’i justified the move of deporting Ayden without charging him in Kenyan courts.

He persuaded the MPs that charging the Turkish national with unlawful entry and money laundering would only result in a six-month term, and given Kenya’s diplomatic connection with Turkey, they decided to deport him.

The expulsion of Ayden, a close associate of Deputy President William Ruto, has heightened political tensions between him and President Uhuru Kenyatta, with Ruto even apologizing to Turkey for the event.
