Tanzania turns to God; Magufuli declares 3-day prayer period

Tanzanian President John Pombe Magufuli has declared a three day national prayer period to help combat Coronavirus as the country’s cases rise to 94.

“Fellow Tanzanians, due to the pandemic, I urge you to use these three days, from April 17 to April 19, to pray for God’s protection and healing,” the president tweeted on Thursday evening.

Magufuli urged all the Christians to pray for the country to overcome Covid-19 pandemic that has infected more than 2million people globally.

Tanzania is yet to impose any restrictions on movement and life has continued normally with Magufuli urging Tanzanians to work harder during this period to grow the economy. Only schools have been closed and social gathering suspended.

On Thursday Tanzania recorded six more positive cases bringing the total number of infections to 94. Four patients have succumbed to the virus since the country reported its first case on March 16.

However, eleven patients have recovered while 1,191 contacts are being followed up according to the country’s ministry of health.

Cases in Tanzania have been reported in the capital, Dar es Salaam, Mwanza city on the shores of Lake Victoria and Northern Kilimanjaro.

Corona virus was first reported in Wuhan China in December and has killed at least 144,515 people globally, with at least 2,166,832 infections. So far 546,269 people have recovered globally.
