Junet Mohammed faults Government for improper utilization of Covid-19 funds

House Minority Whip Hon. Junet Mohamed has come out to condemn the government for failing to allocate funds for proper use in the current Coronavirus pandemic.

Junet faulted the government for its decision to have patients and others booked in for quarantine pay for their bills despite the government allocating funds for managing the corona crisis.

“We are not going to allow this government to trace people and put them into quarantine and expect them to pay for their upkeep. The government must pay for the upkeep of the contact they have traced.” He said.

He went on to ask the house to hold the government accountable for ‘fake’ promises of delivering masks and sanitizers. He lamented how Members of Parliament are on the frontline in supplying masks and sanitizers.

“This government could not even afford to give the people free masks… We were told there will be free sanitizers, Kenya Pipeline was ordered to give chemicals for processing sanitizers, corona is almost ending… we have not seen any free sanitizers”, He said.

While concluding, Junet Mohamed cited plans to hold the government responsible for the manner in which the controversial budget was planned and allocated.

“People are discussing shamelessly tea of 4 Million, when people are dying of corona… we must condemn this in the strongest possible manner. I want this house to rise up and condemn this action and hold the government accountable” He concluded.

CS Kagwe came under fire for the Coronavirus pandemic, but assured Kenyans that any misappropriation would be investigated.

For instance, tea and snacks budget had been set at Ksh.10 Million, and it was reported that Ksh.4 Million has been spent.

Ambulances were hired at a cost of 42 Million collectively according to the budget. The cost of fueling and maintaining 30 vehicles at a rate of Ksh.40,000 per motor vehicle is Ksh. 14.4m with the budget indicating that the Ministry has spent Ksh.2.3 Billion to deal with the pandemic.
