KUPPET, TSC Headed For Collision Over Teachers Salary

As the current CBA is expected to expire this month the Teacher Service Commission TSC has received threats from KUPPET demanding a salary increment of teachers coming next month. TSC has not negotiated any CBA to replace the one expiring soon.

TSC has received a seven-day notice from KUPPET demanding a counteroffer to the 2021-2025 proposal which was tabled by the union in 2019. Akelo Misori, KUPPET Secretary-General told a journalist, “We wish to state that teachers expect nothing short of a salary review this year.”

Since the union submitted the proposal,TSC and KUPPET officials have been threatening each other.

Teachers have been made by the commission believe that it is waiting for an advisory from the Salaries and Remuneration Commission SRC before presenting a counter offer and this is according to Mr. Misori.

He said,”We have gathered that the advisory was given but TSC has not shared it with us.”

He added by saying that the union wrote a letter to TSC, National Treasury and SRC two weeks ago. After TSC received the letter it didn’t give any indications on pay rise negotiations.

Mr. Misori wrote, “These circumstances have spawned anxiety in the service. They should be urgently addressed to conclude the process with time left. in my opinion, teachers deserve a pay rise.
