CS Macharia — Nairobi Expressway evidence of a successful PPP model

Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia has lauded the government for considering a proper Public Private Partnership in the construction of the Nairobi Expressway. – By Gerald Gekara.

“Inspecting construction of Nairobi Expressway with my fellow Cabinet Secretaries. This is the first PPP Toll Road Project in Kenya. For the first time in our history, a road project will be fully financed by private investors & not through the National Exchequer.” CS Macharia said.

While praising the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), CS Macharia said the project has left Kenyans, particularly Nairobians, on edge as to how fast a sophisticated road project can be put up.

The road is another feather in the cap for Kenya National Highways Authority, who have worked alongside the China Ex-Im Bank to ensure the project is fully funded to eliminate delays on the busy road.

The Nairobi Expressway will run from Mololongo through Uhuru Highway to the junction with James Gichuru road.

This new road, which will include an elevated highway, will eliminate traffic congestion on Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway and Waiyaki Way.

Other projects that have been undertaken under such engagement include; the Lake Turkana Wind Power Project in Kenya, the Henri Konan Bédié Bridge in Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal’s Dakar-Diamniadio Road, power and water projects in Ghana, Nigeria and Rwanda and the Tanger-Med port project in Morocco, among others.

So far the model is under investigation and trial in other african countries
