The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has called out Oscar Sudi after he verbally assaulted a media house on social media.

According to a complaint filed at the media regulator, the verbal assault on Citizen TV by Kapseret Member of Parliament Hon Oscar Sudi via a social media post was meant to intimidate the station’s editorial discretion.

In a statement issued on Thursday, CEO David Omwoyo stated that the council is concerned that such threats will incite the public and political supporters against the media, exposing journalists and media practitioners to violations of their rights as they carry out their legitimate duties.

“Attacks against and intimidation of the media contravenes Articles 34 and 35 of the Constitution on the Freedom of Media and Access to Information.” read part of the statement.

The council further stated that it has documented 45 cases of press freedom violations since January 2022, the majority of which are related to electioneering and political campaigns.

Omwoyo has advised Kenyans, particularly politicians, who are dissatisfied with the media to seek redress through the Media Complaints Commission, which was established by the Media Council Act, 213 to resolve media-related disputes.
