Kenya Police Extrajudicial Killings Drop By 31 Percent

According to a Missing Voice report, there were 152 incidents of extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances in 2022.

Based to the Accountability study, which sheds light on Statistics and Trends of Extrajudicial Killings and Enforced Disappearances in Kenya in 2022, 130 of the 152 incidents were police killings and 22 were enforced disappearances.

Despite the large number, there was a 31.5 per cent decline in police killings and enforced disappearances last year compared to 2021, when Missing Voices identified 219 occurrences.

Police killings have also decreased by 30.1 per cent, while disappearances have decreased by 38%.

“This is a positive trend, and we look forward to a Kenya free of police violence,” the study concludes.

According to the data, January saw the largest number of police killings, with 28 cases from 11 events.

July came in second, with 21 police killings in 12 incidents.

February was the third-highest month, with 13 police killings resulting from nine instances.

“There were no enforced disappearances recorded in April, July, November, or December 2022,” according to the study.
